about

written, performed, and produced by Brad Peterson
I sometimes think about veterans (not just soldiers, but citizens too) who might be anguished and alone. I also venerate those who’ve seen the ugliest and most horrific sides of mankind and maintain an outwardly pleasant disposition. This song is a snapshot of a quiet moment, of a solitary person, in a nearly still room, ruminating a violent memory. My favorite thing I’ve ever done on drums happens in the few bars after the three-minute mark.

lyrics

old clothes
worn threadbare thin
the photograph that fades
and torn where it's pinned
the dust floats through the light
swirls around and passes
in a lonely aimless flight
letters written and never sent
from a faithful fool
to a phantom friend
slowing down
begin to end
what it doesn't break
the wind does only bend
the sand upon a distant shore has been
washed away then to return again
crossed the waters to escape the thrall
all the creatures great and small
stood in wonder of it all
yea
then gradually the white dissolves to black
thunder rumbles far away'
sleeping with eyes open
soon we'll rue the day
embers drift from distant flame
the smoke is slowly shifting and soon will come the rain

Singer/songwriter Brad Peterson exemplifies the ethos of the independent, intrepid musician better than almost anyone. ... more
